From the shop

The small details that keep a door secure.

Every home has a door everyone actually uses and a door nobody thinks about. The side entrance by the driveway, the door from the garage, the basement walkout: these are the ones that tend to carry the flimsiest hardware and get the least attention. Part of our first visit is walking the whole perimeter with you, so the effort goes where the traffic and the risk really are.

The work we take on

Sometimes the job is obvious: a key snapped in the cylinder, a deadbolt that spins without catching. Other times you know something is wrong but not what to ask for. Either way, start here. Each service page describes the symptoms, the fix and what to have ready.

Lockouts

Lockout Services

A broken key is not a reason to break the lock. Extraction tools reach the fragment, the cylinder is inspected for damage, and a fresh key is cut from the pieces or from the code stamped on the original.

Change or rekey

Change or Rekey Locks

Most home locks were whatever the builder had on the truck, and the strike is screwed into softwood trim rather than the framing. Upgrading those fixings and the bolt behind them is unglamorous work that changes how a door resists a shoulder.

  1. A silver-colored deadbolt set in clear packaging with two keys resting on the countertop in front. — Lock Rekeying, Vaughan
Lock RekeyingYour roommate moved out last weekend. Rent is settled, the room is empty, and the key is still on their ring.
  2. Person holding a silver-colored lock beside an open wooden door with exposed circular holes and a latch at its edge. — Deadbolt Installation, Vaughan
Deadbolt InstallationThe bolt on the front door is keyed on both sides. Getting out at night means finding the key in the dark, and with a toddler in the house you have decided the inside should turn by hand.
  3. Detached satin-nickel lever hardware, tubular latch and strike plate on a wooden workbench. — Lock Replacement & Upgrade, Vaughan
Lock Replacement & UpgradeEvery morning the front door key needs the same little dance: push in, lift, wiggle, turn. It has been getting worse for a year, and this week it took three tries in the cold before the deadbolt finally gave.
  4. Person holding a long door handle and rectangular lock case beside an open wooden door with exposed hardware recesses. — Vintage Mortise Lock Service, Vaughan
Vintage Mortise Lock ServiceYou bought a house with its original hardware and a bag of loose keys. Some open interior doors, some fit nothing, and the front door lock has a keyhole shaped for a key you do not have.
  5. Person holding a black door-handle assembly and a latch beside a glazed door with exposed lock openings. — Smart Lock Installation, Vaughan
Smart Lock InstallationArthritis has made the small house key hard to grip and turn, especially with gloves on in January. Pressing a few buttons, or tapping a fob against the lock, would make coming home in winter far easier.
  6. Pale blue garden gate with a black lever latch between light stone pillars. — Gate & Building Entry Locks, Vaughan
Gate & Building Entry LocksThe driveway gate drags a groove into the gravel every time it swings, and the latch stopped catching weeks ago. Now it sits propped shut with a brick, waiting for anyone to walk through and forget to prop it back.
  7. Detached threaded cam lock and mounting washer on a workbench in front of closed mail compartments. — Mailbox Lock Replacement, Vaughan
Mailbox Lock ReplacementSomeone tried to pry the little door on the mailbox open with a screwdriver, and though the mail sitting inside is untouched, the lock now sits crooked in its hole and the key barely catches when it is turned.

Commercial

Commercial Locks

For multi-tenant buildings, the entry door, the mailroom, the mechanical room and each suite need their own place in a key plan. Commercial services include designing and installing that plan and keeping it workable as tenants come and go.

How a visit goes

One key for the whole house is a common request and usually achievable. Cylinders that share the same keyway, the shaped channel the key slides into, can all be pinned to the same new combination, so the front door, back door and garage entry answer to a single key.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.
  1. 1 of 3

    Understanding the safe

We ask what the safe is for, how it is opened and what has changed: a lost combination, a dead keypad, a bolt that will not retract. Each points to a different approach.

  2. 2 of 3

    Opening or repairing carefully

Where a combination can be reset or a keypad replaced, we do that. Where the safe must be opened without its code, we use the method that leaves it usable afterwards.

  3. 3 of 3

Setting it up for you again

Once it works we help you choose a new combination or code, show you how to change it later and suggest a sensible place to keep a record.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 8%Newer homes

About 8% of homes in Vaughan were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Newer homes are built to standard bores and backsets, so nearly any modern deadbolt, lever set or smart lock fits straight on. The locksmith can offer a wide range of hardware knowing it will mount cleanly without new holes.

  • 63%Mostly houses

Single-detached houses make up about 63% of homes in Vaughan (2021 Census).

Garage entry doors on detached houses are often the household's real front door, used more than the formal entry. They deserve the same quality of lock, and keying them alike with the house means one key does the whole daily routine.

Your questions, our answers

(289) 216-4650

How long does a rekeying visit take?

It scales with the number of cylinders and how many need attention beyond pinning. A single deadbolt is a short bench job; a whole house with five or six exterior cylinders, a couple of swaps for mismatched keyways and a set of spares to cut and test takes a good deal longer. Tell the locksmith how many doors you want included when you book, and the visit can be planned realistically rather than guessed at.

My deadbolt says I can rekey it myself with a little tool. Should I?

You can, given a key that currently operates the lock, the maker's reset tool, the new key and the steps followed in order. Trouble tends to arrive when the old key is missing, when the new key belongs to a different keyway, or when a reset stalls halfway and the cylinder then accepts neither key. A locksmith carries the tool and the procedure, can check that the new key suits the rest of your doors, and can fit a standard cylinder if a forced reset has broken the mechanism.

Can a smart lock or keypad deadbolt be rekeyed?

The mechanical part of it can. Many keypad or app-controlled deadbolts hide a small keyed cylinder under a cap for the day the batteries fail, and that cylinder can be pinned to your house key so the backup key on your ring is the same one that opens the other doors; some models are key-free and rely on an external battery backup instead. Codes are a separate matter: the locksmith will suggest deleting any code belonging to someone who no longer needs access at the same time.

Why does the locksmith care so much about the strike plate?

Because that is where a kicked door fails. The bolt is strong, but it sits in a pocket in the jamb held by a thin plate and short screws, and a boot splits the wood around it. A reinforced strike or box strike fastened with three-inch screws into the wall framing spreads the blow along the frame. It is the least visible part of the upgrade and often the one that does the most.
